Are you talking to me? Adapting to different audiences
August 3, 2023
In this workshop, the Water Hub's Sarah Bucci and Zakiyaa Taylor covered the basics of profiling and understanding audiences in order to tailor messages for the most impact. An audience is the intended target for a message, the individuals or groups whose behavior you want to change or mobilize to achieve your goal. Audiences can be defined by shared traits, geography, and values. Getting specific about who you are trying to reach helps advocates and activists build trust and move people to action.
There are three main variables that can impact how your audience receives your messaging: frame, tone, and messenger.
A frame are the lenses through which you experience the world and take in a message.
Tone lends credibiltiy and authenticity to your message.
The messenger should reinforce your frame and build trust with your audience.
